STORIES MATTER

“Weird. Wonderful. Meaningful.”

We tell stories to help us understand the world. Fiction makes sense of facts. That’s why I write, and why we all write. To find truth in fantasy. And if you’re entertained along the way, so be it…

WHY STORYTELLING?

“Storytelling is universal and is as ancient as humankind. Before there was writing, there was storytelling. It occurs in every culture and from every age. It exists (and existed) to entertain, to inform, and to promulgate cultural traditions and values.” That quote was from a 2020 article in National Geographic. But if storytelling can shape our societies and who we are, why does narrative have that power? Why do stories matter?

"Storytelling is the most powerful way to put ideas into the world."

Anthropologists believe that stories evolved so early humans could share important information. “That furry thing with the sharp teeth isn’t your friend. Let me tell you a tale about someone who made that mistake.” We learn better when we’re emotional, and stories evoke emotion in a way that dry facts do not. Stories make us feel, and feelings help us remember lessons that could save our lives. But even though (most of us) these days don’t have to worry about getting eaten, storytelling still guides us. A good story warns us who we don’t want to become or gives us an ideal to strive towards. Stories still save our lives — if not from hungry predators, then from ourselves.

CREATING TOGETHER

So that’s why stories matter. And that’s why I write. Romantic? Ambitious? Pretentious? Sure. But it’s what I love. So if you need fiction that makes you feel, holds nuggets of truth, and entertains (of course), then join my mailing list for free comics, short stories, and short films. And explore the site and learn how to create fiction of your own. Because the world needs more stories.
